About Isoline

Isoline is a quarterly journal about how places get drawn — by surveyors, by utility engineers, by anyone who has to commit a shifting thing to a fixed sheet. It is made by three people in Ghent and printed in an edition of 900.

Why the plates look like that

Every plate on this site is generated from the piece it belongs to: the title is turned into a number, the number seeds a contour set, and the contours are drawn in the browser. No image is ever downloaded. It is a small joke about generalisation, which is the subject of at least one piece per issue.

How it is paid for

Subscriptions and one municipal archive that buys forty copies of each issue for its reading room. There is no advertising, and there will not be.

Corrections

We publish corrections at the foot of the piece they belong to, dated, with the original wording kept. A map that quietly changes is not a map you can use.
